Het onlangs van het Garda meer naar Sardinie verhuisde YES Sails (om daar hun nieuwe zeilen het hele jaar door te kunnen testen) gaf een eerste indruk van een set revolutionaire prototypes, zeggen ze.De nieuwe Formula zeilen maken gebruik van een bijzonder nieuw materiaal voor windsurf zeilen. Het is lichter dan monofilm, rekt minder en het belangrijkste is dat het duurzamer en sterker is dan andere materialen die voorheen werden gebruikt.
De ontwerper Peter Munzlinger: “I am developing these new sails using a new technology. It´s a new material with oriented threads bonded between two very thin layers of mylar. What we found testing the first prototypes is a softer sail but at the same time extremely stable. Until now everybody has used monofilm because it stretches the same amount in every direction, but it stretches. With this technology with the right orientation and material choice of the threads you can much better control the way the sail works. The range of use of the sail is extended, in lightwind the softer sail breathes much better and in overpowered the oriented threads keep the profile in the front of the sail. These sails are also lighter and much more durable. Until now I only did 11,0 m sails but in the future we will have a complete range. I am very excited about this new project, after so many years of monofilm it´s time for new materials in windsurfing sails.â€
